We are excited to announce College of Marin has adopted Canvas, a new Course Management System (CMS) that will replace Moodle. A small pilot of Canvas took place during the 2017 Spring semester. During the 2017 Summer session, faculty had the option to use either Moodle or Canvas. All COM faculty and students will use Canvas beginning Fall Semester 2017. To access Canvas, click the login link on the left navigation menu of this page or log into the MyCOM Portal and click the Canvas link listed in the Quick Links menu.
Why Canvas?
The selection of Canvas as the CMS was nearly unanimous among the Online Education Initiative CMS Committee, the group who was in charge of making the decision. Their goal was to choose a common CMS to better serve all California Community College students. After comparing Canvas to many other learning management systems, such as Moodle and Blackboard, the Committee found Canvas to best serve students because of its ease of use, streamlined and modern design, and its compatibility with a wide variety of computers and mobile devices.
What is Canvas?
Canvas is an easy-to-use, cloud-based course management system (CMS), also known as a learning management system (LMS), that connects all the digital tools and resources teachers use into one simple place. These tools and resources might include class handouts such as PowerPoint slides or articles, discussion forums, online assignment submissions, and links to videos or other applications used for instruction.

Faculty Moodle to Canvas Migration
Faculty and staff will be responsible for migrating their own courses from Moodle to Canvas. Faculty and staff who are responsible for maintaining course sites now have access to Canvas and may begin working on Summer and Fall courses. Spring courses are also available which can be used as “sandboxes” for exploring Canvas and importing content.
